Have you ever wondered how faith and therapy interact?
My Christian faith shapes how I understand and approach my work. However, if you do not identify as a Christian, that is no problem. I see clients from a variety of backgrounds and faith traditions.
If you are a Christian, you may have questions about therapy. You may wonder,
Can't I just pray this away? Do I really need therapy?
This can be such a frustrating dilemma. The answer is probably both. Sometimes our prayers do work the way we want them to, yet other times the process is more complex. Therapy is often the next step in a deeper work God wants to do in your life - one that a simple prayer wouldn't necessarily accomplish. It's a process that will challenge you to seek Him and depend on Him more.
If you are a Christian, therapy is an investment in your relationship with God.
Maybe you believe that God has impossible expectations of you, or that you will never be enough for God. Maybe God seems more like your own less-than-perfect father than a Loving Parent. Perhaps you've heard pastors tell you to "just have compassion" or "just keep sacrificing yourself" in difficult relationships, yet you feel confused about how to live this out.
These concerns and others like them are so important! You should not have to tackle them on your own. In therapy, we can work through the confusion and distortions that have been so painful to live with and bring you to a place of deeper healing and freedom in Christ. We can help you to receive God's love more fully - to let Him love parts of you that you find so difficult to accept - so that you can walk with Him more closely, and more powerfully, in daily life.
Practically speaking, we can incorporate prayer, faith-based books, Scripture reading, and other spiritual disciplines that resonate with you.
You do not have to keep living with debilitating beliefs about God and yourself.
Don't let these beliefs hold you back from being the woman God created you to be! Therapy can help you to live a more spiritually fulfilling, free, and empowered life.
